Somehow it was more dangerous to walk the streets of Gotham than it had been before. His hood was still up, head bowed, each passing glance fueling his high strung paranoia a little more. Before no one knew, even if they saw his face there was a sort of inability to see anything but the scars, and even more inability to put together the face of the man so much of Gotham knew. No one had put it together yet, even those he had hunted who had lived, staring straight up at him.

Part of him was livid in the confusion because that is what was comfortable. When he raised his hand to his face he felt skin, when he closed his eyes there was no phantom spasm of muscle and skin that was no longer there. There was no pain and somehow that was worse. All he had was his thoughts.

Harvey moved in a disjointed way, a hopeless effort in case someone tried to follow (Bruce's friend the Bat of course, considering he was just at the billionaire's house). When he reached the house he made no attempt at silence, throwing the door open as he entered. It took him a moment longer to pull his hood away. His scars he never felt uncomfortable with, but this- he didn't know what it meant, if anything had changed.

It wasn't easy to track down what had happened to Harvey - oh, he was quick to say all over his post about his face, but the reason was utterly beyond the Joker at the moment. It was irritating, infuriating, would it last? If it lasted, God, he'd lose -

When he heard the door slamming, he slunk into the living room, almost skittish but more cautious, just to see if this little change had brought Harvey around to the Batman's side, to bring Batman right on in. No, didn't look like it - ugh.

"It's annoying enough looking at Naylor's face." The coast was clear, right? He slouched forward, "Let me look."

"Annoying isn't the word I'd use." Harvey answered, taking a moment to even locate the other man. His glance was cautious at first, half expecting some attempt at re scarring him. Just a mad dog, right? He moved forward, shutting the door loudly behind him.

"She said it's temporary." He continued, tone hesitant, as though he wasn't sure how to feel about it. Some hysteric part of him wanted to burn the skin off himself. The other-

"Stop acting like an idiot." He muttered, not even sure what behavior annoyed him but growing irritated nonetheless.

"She." Immediately he filed through the names of goddesses, "Ahhah. Eris, that bitch." And yet it was said almost fondly; after all, chaos loves chaos.

He rolled his eyes and grabbed Harvey by the chin, yanking him forward to look at his face, "I'm not an idiot. I don't know what you're thinking." He pressed his thumb into Harvey's newly-fleshy cheek, remembering how he could hook his fingers through his mouth if he had wanted to - ugh.

"Normal, normal, normal."

"Apparently she was bored." Harvey said, a dry snap to his tone. He had dealt with chaos long enough to know there was nothing more complicated in her intentions than that. He didn't begrudge her for it, as irritating as this little episode was ending up to be.

Harvey's eyes narrowed as his chin was grabbed but he didn't pull away, allowed the Joker his inspection and apparent disgust. His own brow furrowed when he touched the newly healed side, to a phantom pain touching the scars would have brought. His expression darkened further as he slapped the hand away.

"Oh, so Crane's normal now too?" He muttered, walking passed him. "Nothing's-" changed. He trailed off- he just wasn't sure if it was true.

Date: 2009-05-24 09:51 am (UTC)
tntandgasoline: (Seriously?)
From: [personal profile] tntandgasoline
He followed Harvey as he moved, stepped to get in front of him - not necessarily stopping him, but at least to get in the way. "No, no no no, Crane can never be normal. You, though, Harvey, you can be but you're not." He grinned, or grimaced, and reached out to ruffle Harvey's hair in mock affection. "You aren't afraid of me touching you. Nothing's - oh, what? Changed? No, you're right. Nothing's changed at all."

From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
Harvey stopped only to glare as the Joker spoke, the expression not fitting quite well on his face. You don't know the first thing about who I was. No, that wasn't right. He just didn't understand it.

"I was never afraid of you." Just what you represented. He didn't bother slapping the hand away, as strange as it was for anyone else to touch the healed area. His expression faltered.

"I'm not sure of that." He commented, sincerely and to himself, actually pushing the hand away this time and turning his head in a tried exasperation.

"No, but you wouldn't let me touch you." He didn't like the look on Harvey's face - well, no, he liked it, but it was so... unusual now. Like someone cutting all their hair off one day.

"Oh?" He leaned in and grinned, licking his lips absently. "And what, uh, what's changed? Your girlfriend is still dead."

From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
"I know now there's no point in fighting it. You'd only enjoy that." Harvey answered dryly, eyes glancing to the side as if to move away when the Joker began to speak again.

His eyes fell back, expression darkening predictably when the words left his mouth. He stayed still for a long moment, hand moving up and to the Joker's neck almost casually.

"I told you not to speak about her." He said lowly, tone barely controlled. "Do you want a reaction? Is that it?" His hand suddenly closed on his neck, not quite tightly enough to block airflow but uncomfortably.

"Nothing's changed but something's changed. A fucking riddle. Maybe we should ask your good pal Ed."

The Joker didn't flinch at the hand around his neck, blandly smiling at Harvey. "Nothing's changed. Your girlfriend is still dead and you've still shot somebody without flipping for their life first."

He imagined he could see Harvey's festering wounds under his skin and laughed. "You're still going to hit me until I bleed. Do I need to get the knife? Do you need to slice my face open again?"

He hoped not, it'd only just healed up.

Harvey looked almost surprised, staring at the Joker. What did he want, what was this about? What answer was he looking for here- a yes, no, maybe a lie.

It took him a moment to realize he was rationalizing, he was doing just what he had tried the first time they had met and played that ridiculous game of twenty questions, tried to understand something that didn't need understanding- that maybe couldn't be understood. He was struck with a sort of panic- was he reverting back somehow? He was thinking the same as the months passed, nothing had changed but something was still different, something he couldn't put his finger on and it was driving him mad.

"You're wrong." He said, grip tightening just a touch. "You're right- I don't know." He looked at the make up and realized the Joker still made sense like no one else did. He released his neck, shoving the man roughly away. The man's words before set him on edge, about Rachel and that night he had betrayed chance. Loaded god damned comments doing their job.

"And what about you? Without your damned scars." He turned, almost pacing. "What's missing?"

He stepped back easily, side-stepping like he did the first time he ran into Harvey - and he just now remembered that this wasn't exactly his Harvey, since his had died but no, no, this was - it was too complicated and he didn't care anyway. He cooed, pursing his lips like he felt bad for poor, poor Harvey Dent. "Aw, it's okay not to know! Don't let that get you down. Nobody knows." All the trouble I've seen.

"The scars don't define me, Harvey," he sighed, melodramatically, "When will you all realize that the scars, they're just there - I'm more than that." He reached out and rapped his knuckles against Harvey's head, "There's all that gray stuff up there and that's what really matters."

From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
He couldn't tell whether he didn't punch him because something had changed or because he just couldn't care.

"Not define- but they mean something." Harvey muttered, like trying to explain something beyond his listener's grasp. He ran a hand over his face and it was a little less strange then the time before, and the time before that. Fucking Eris.

What really matters. What really mattered was this wasn't his choice- chance's choice. Wasn't it as simple as that? "I know." He slapped at the hand again, voice lowering in a comfortable way. "I killed a man this morning and couldn't show my face. That's all that changed." Felt like a lie.

He smacked Harvey upside the head and hooked his arm around his shoulders, dragging him in. "You could go back, you know," he said, almost mildly, "It wouldn't be hard. But it won't last and I hope you know that." The Joker stuck his nails into Harvey's cheek, hard, "And they only mean something to everyone else. They're just a weapon to me."

Date: 2009-05-24 01:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
This time he shoved the hand away roughly, voice taking on a harsher tone. "I'm not going back." he spat. "Not now. This doesn't mean anything- the scars didn't mean anything."

He let the words sink in, blinking rapidly a moment. His cheek hurt and that felt more natural now than it being painless. He tasted gasoline on his tongue. He wondered if the Joker could always feel twine holding his smile together.

"That night, I can't remember why I killed him." He muttered, looking at the Joker. "What did you do?" Why hadn't he flipped? It didn't sound accusing, just curious, morbidly so at the sharp change of topic.

tntandgasoline: (You think this works?)
From: [personal profile] tntandgasoline
"Atta boy." The Joker patted Harvey's cheek lightly, not really removing himself physically but there was a distancing there, a dismissal. His worries were alleviated for the time being - even though he shouldn't just trust the words, but the actions.

He frowned at that, rolled his eyes as he tried to remember. "I didn't do anything, if I remember right." There was a laugh in his voice - how often did he remember things correctly?

Date: 2009-05-25 12:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
The dismissal was grating, condescending somehow, even though it should hardly have been a shocking tone. Between the Joker and Bruce everything felt like a test, like turning his head and suddenly everything he said or did was being evaluated for meaning that really wasn't there. Trust- it would be funny if that's what it all came down to.

"You don't remember anything correctly." Harvey answered in a tone edging on a sigh. He brushed passed, sitting at the couch. He didn't feel like delving into that night. "What if I changed my mind one day and tried to shoot you?" He asked, far too casually to not sound ridiculous to an outside observer.

tntandgasoline: (Kill you? I don't want to KILL you)

He let Harvey move past, watching him idly as he sat down - God, that face. Well, at least he was handsome no matter how much skin he had; that was usually a bonus. "Good point."

Harvey's question didn't surprise him. He settled down on the arm of the couch closest to Harvey, shrugging before tipping backwards into Harvey's lap and grinning up at him. "You'd shoot me."

Harvey made no move, even when the other fell back onto his lap with that damned grin. He glanced down, the clearness of his vision with both eyes intact somehow stranger than the painted man below his gaze.

"You wouldn't try to stop me?" He asked, shifting his leg to make the clown more uncomfortable.

"How? Beg for my life?" The Joker clasped his hands together under his chin and stared up at Harvey with a melodramatically fearful pout. "Oh, please, Harvey, don't kill me! I'll do anything!"

He broke out in laughter. "Really, Harvey."

From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
Harvey rolled his eyes, shoving him roughly though not enough to be considered violent just yet. "Don't act like you'd be helpless." He answered. Like he didn't have the unearthly ability to turn any situation on it's head.

tntandgasoline: (Ah I see now...)
From: [personal profile] tntandgasoline
The Joker laughed and barely budged with the shove. "If you wanted to shoot me, if you could shoot me, you would, Harvey! Stop acting like it's a fucking hypothetical question you're asking - we both know that we're both fully capable of killing each other on any given day." He waved a hand, tone bland - like talking about potential death was like talking about the weather.

"But you won't, because in the end, Harvey, you are tied to that coin, and the scars are just another weapon for you, too. Whether you're crispy or flabby," and here he patted Harvey on the cheek mildly, "-it's all about the choice thing."

Date: 2009-05-26 09:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
Harvey hit the hand away in irritation, a ridiculous gesture considering the other's position. "Choice." He muttered, sitting back.

"Choice and chance and god damned chaos." His tongue brushed against the inside of his cheek and he nearly laughed. "You know they keep asking me how I feel about this. If I want it to be permanent."

Date: 2009-05-26 09:17 am (UTC)
tntandgasoline: (Isn't that special?)

The Joker just laughed at that, shaking his head vaguely. "Even if you did, deciding to keep it would just make Eris want to turn it back even more."

From: [identity profile] thedawniscoming.livejournal.com
"I know." Harvey said with a sigh in his tone. "Maybe I should just flip a coin and see where we all go from there." He said, irritated but a few steps too close to serious.

The Joker rolled his eyes and reached a hand in to one of Harvey's pockets, digging around and producing the coin that his pal was just so uptight about. He twisted it about in his fingers for a minute, then held it up for Harvey to grab. "Go ahead. But remember, when you decide to do one thing, life has a crazy tendency to do exactly the opposite."
