The Batman, he thought, walking down the street without his hood. The streets were deserted besides the the occasional figure darting out here and there, the sound of sirens and the smell of smoke in the backdrop. He twirled his coin between his fingers, strolling as he would have years before, on his way to work, to school, to Rachel's. It was nostalgia with a sharp, bitter edge, all curled up in the varying degrees of destruction around him. Gotham was on fire again. This time he couldn't remember he needed to care.

The Batman was hiding and Harvey was pissed. It was hilarious and maddening and all those overwhelming things that only Batman could invoke these days. It was beautiful really, exactly what he always wanted. It reminded him of a purging fire, destroying everything to be built anew. The Joker would selfdestruct and the Batman already had and wasn't it just the perfect punch line to this whole drawn out joke?

Harvey stopped at the right building, took the elevator up past the Joker's goons who only eyed him nervously at this point but didn't say anything else. When he reached the top he walked to the large windows, towards the figure standing silhouetted against them.

"Have you scared him out yet?" He asked, stopping at his side.

The Joker had been pacing until he'd heard the elevator groaning to life, and then he'd thrown himself at a window, hands against the glass and eyes devouring the sight of his lovely little city playing his favorite tune. He had appearances to keep up; he couldn't pace in front of a guy like Harvey, or a guy like Crane, or Batman - who would have set off warnings and traps if it were him coming up to say hello.

He stepped back when Harvey approached, staring still at the wide world below him. Better to rule in Hell, he thought, and wasn't that what they were trying to do? Make it Hell, make the Batman need to come back...

"No. Not yet, but, uh, he'll - he always comes back, I just haven't put enough heat on to boil his water." He barely glances to the man now standing at his side, "Having fun, Harvey?"

"Or enough sticks of dynamite." Harvey answers, watching the buildings below burn further, frantic lights and figures running here and there to save what most consider beyond redemption nowadays. "At this rate you'll break them before you draw him back."

He doesn't glance over, just continues to regard the city, coin pressed between his fingertips. "Maybe he really won't come back."

"Let them break." He steps back up to the glass and presses his nose into it, breathing hard to fog up the lamplight glowing underneath, so it looks more like an explosion. It's lovely when the world comes crashing down.

He mulls over that idea for a few minutes, giving it serious thought for the third or fourth time this week. What if he didn't come back? What if the Batman stayed gone and Gotham tore itself down? What would he do? What could he do?

"He'll come back." The Joker stepped back, threw his arms wide and tried to hold all of his city in his arms. "They always come back."

"Aren't we the optimist." Harvey answered, eyes sliding over to the Joker. He wasn't sure which he preferred, the return or the slow death. He flipped his coin idly and didn't bother glancing down at the result.

"He can't live with this, watching the city die around him. He will come back." Harvey answered after a pause, looking over to the moon. What had his father said? It's like god flipped a coin and here they were. He never did say if it was heads or tails. "The question is if he comes back to die or to stay."

The Joker turned and dropped his hands, watching Harvey flatly, like he couldn't decide if he liked this negative Nancy bullshit or not. "He'll come back to stay. The Batman is an institution, Harvey - like government or gas companies or the goddamned police. He doesn't disappear for long - just long enough to let me have some fun. He'll come back and then I can get back to work."

"Nothing's permanent, not even the Batman." Harvey answered, glancing back to the Joker as he spoke. "You know as well as I do if he wants out he needs to die, publicly and painfully, by criminal hands- your hands. He knows that too, it's the only way you'd ever stop." He tilted his head. "But you won't kill him so he'd need to die in front of you. He's too guilty to leave his death to my hands. It doesn't leave many options."

The Joker sighed, exasperated, his short attention span already hating this topic but he needed to focus. "Harvey, I don't want the Batman to die. I need him to live. You don't understand, nobody gets it, not you," he jabs a finger at Harvey's chest, "Not them," a wide backwards gesture to the city below, "Not anyone. I need him alive. If only I could, uh, if I could explain it to you, if I could make you see..."

But that wouldn't work. He couldn't do that, he knew what he knew and nobody else was allowed his private information. "Sure, maybe if he dies, this will all be over - but that's not how I want this game to be played."

"This isn't about what you want though." Harvey answered noncommittally, turning his back to the large window to lean back against it. "The ball's in his court. He can be selfish or selfless, continue your game or not." His brow rose. "Maybe you finally broke him."

"No. If anything, that fucking community broke him." He growled low and bared his teeth at his reflection - if the community took the Batman away for good, he would find every last user and destroy them all.

"I don't think he's gone, though." No, there was still somebody out there who had that cowl hidden under a sofa cushion and he knew they had to be seeing what he was doing. They had to know. There was no way to leave.

"Anyone can put on a damned mask." Harvey answered. "Would it matter who it really was anymore? Hell, did it ever matter?" For Harvey it did, for the Joker who knew. Harvey hadn't reached any level of panic on this subject yet, just a calm, watchful waiting for the inevitable outcome.

"Anyone can, sure, but he's, uh, he's the one who makes it the Batman." The Joker waved a hand and then took up pacing again - his facade was well past broken and he really didn't need to bother with hiding from Harvey. "It never matters because the person who is Batman will never be just him. There's two sides, Harvey, and I don't care about the, uh, the man."
